Raschig GmbH, which is based in Ludwigshafen, Germany, manufactures a wide range of thermoset moulding compounds, including melamine-phenolic resin moulding compounds. These are used for applications like producing components for the automotive and electronics industries, and stand out for their very good dimensional stability and mechanical properties. They are so strong, in many cases they can replace metal components.
The central work steps in the company's production include milling the resins and mixing the base material with pigments and additives.
This process inevitably generates dust. Pigment residues, in particular, need to be removed carefully from the process so that the engineered materials are produced in the desired colour, e.g. free from other pigments. Raschig offers a range of around 200 different colours, so batch changes are a common occurrence. This means their vacuum cleaner is in frequent use to handle cleaning of the mixing systems.
One of the vacuums in use is a heavy-duty DS 1229-HL-M, designed and manufactured to comply with explosion protection requirements. Both the pigments and additives, as well as the plastics themselves, are organic substances and are flammable if they are in the air as dust in a certain concentration. The vacuum cleaners on the milling systems have large, 90 litre collection trays so that they can collect large quantities of dust without having to be emptied in the interim. To handle the wide variety of different vacuuming tasks, Raschig uses different extraction systems from Ruwac's product portfolio for the floor, machine housing and interior cleaning.
